Dangerous Tastes: The Story of Spices
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (21 November, 2000)
Author: Andrew Dalby
Average review score:

Well Researched and a Pleasure to Read
I learned a lot from this book, and I showed it to a teacher in culinary arts, and she was very impressed. Andrew does wonderful research, as one might expect from a librarian, but he writes well as well.

Daniel Dennett
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (March, 2002)
Authors: Andrew Brook and Don Ross
Average review score:

An intellectual rosetta stone for some fundamental ideas
This is a book whose value goes way beyond its subject matter. This book is so valuable because Dennett's participation in fundmental issues of cognitive science, evolutionary theory, and philosophy of mind have drawn comments from so many other leading intellectual figures. By looking at what different authors think of Dennett's various distinct ideas in basic issues of philosophy of mind and evolution, it is possible to learn more about their own, and that seems to be part of what the editors intended to do. That makes this examination of Dennett's ideas, and especially their influence outside of his field, a kind of rosetta stone for understanding many current issues in philosophy and biology.

For example, there is a chapter on the evolutionary psychologists' critique of social sciences, showing how it builds on Dennett's evolutionary cognitivism but strays from it at some points. The contrast helps point out the strengths and weaknesses of both the evolutionary psychologists' and Dennett's views, as well as helping clarify what might remain of the foundations of social sciences once the smoke clears. Similarly illuminating is the chapter on Dennett's participation in debates with Stephen Jay Gould over the search for adaptations in studying human evolution.

Dennett's ideas are presented very clearly in a way that non-specialists can appreciate, and the choice of authors who are experts in other fields (rather than solely philosophers) works well in most cases, showing that ideas do matter, and that good philosophers sometimes do have an identifiable and positive impact on other areas of culture.

The Dark Spirit: Sinister Portraits from Celtic History
Published in Hardcover by Sterling Publishing (June, 2001)
Authors: Bob Curran and Andrew Whitson
Average review score:

The Other Side of Celtic Myth
If you enjoy Celtic myths and legends but find yourself drawn to the more frightening creatures in them, then this book is for you! The author starts each story with a brief historical backround and then plunges into the dark & scary shadows of Celtic lore. There are no cute "flower fairies" here: but you will find stories about the unquiet dead who hate the living, evil, hateful faeries that bring death to mortals, demons and dangerous spirits that inhabit trees and the very landscape itself. This book proves that life was not all sunshine and flowers for the Celts; there was a dark side, and this book will take you there!

A Darling Amazon

Author: Sylvia Andrew

One of the best Regency Romances!
I bought this book in Hawaii just to have something to read while on vacation. I thought it was another typical regency story. What a surprise-- it was wonderful!

Julia is an intelligent girl, who as a very young girl had the misfortune of having a dismal season. She was too young and not ready for society. An incident in her season with Hugh, Lord Rostherne, mortifies and embarrasses Julia. She and her father leave London to live a quiet life. Her father is very ill, and he will leave her a rich woman of indepence but he wants her to be happily settled. To relieve his fears she tells her father she is engaged to Lord Rostherne. Unfortunately, it is published in the Gazette. Lord Rostherne is in need of an heiress to save his beloved home Donyatt. Due to the information leaked to the Gazette, he has lost his chances for such an alliance.

These two characters come together with the notion that marriage would solve both their problems and discover love. This is not your typical "formula" romance.

Buy it, the story will touch an emotional chord.

The Day of Christ's Return: What the Bible Teaches, What You Need to Know
Published in Paperback by CRC Pubns (October, 1998)
Author: Andrew Kuyvenhoven
Average review score:

Great for Reformed Believers
There are very few works related to the "end times" that relate to Reformed views. For centuries, it has been one of those undiscussed issues. Keyvenhoven lays out all the important issues amidst supporting ideas. The book eases into the theology, but is fair in representing many different viewpoints. Essential for Reformed believers who may never hear this topic preached on Sunday mornings.

For now I'm in low budget, bus as soon as I get enough fund I'm going to buy a copy of this, and write a proper review. But if this is the complete text in original language, it's a must for everyone who wants to examine the DSS seriously.

Decision Making in Pediatric Neurologic Physical Therapy
Published in Hardcover by Churchill Livingstone (15 June, 1999)
Authors: Suzann K. Campbell, Susan K. Campbell, and Andrew Allen
Average review score:

The content fits the title
I am a PT with 13 years of experience. The last 6 years consisted mostly of a pediatric case load. I purchased this book due to its title.

At first I found the first chapter a little overwhelming. I scanned over it and continued reading the rest of the book. I found the book fascinating, and was unable to put it down during some free time in the summer. I finished the book reading chapter 1 again.

The opening chapter describes models for decision making that may be helpful to clinicians in reflecting on their practice. Each contributor in the book, an expert in her field, has reviewed the recent literature on her topic and has presented case reports on children from her practice. In their case reports the contributors elaborate on the bases for their choices of goals, the measures used to document problems and progress and the intervention provided.

Both the novice and experienced pediatric PT will benefit from this book.

Reflecting back, my excitement after reading just the title was rewarded by improved patient care after reading the content.

Decisions on the Rules of Golf 2000-2001
Published in Hardcover by Hamlyn (17 November, 1999)
Authors: The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and United States Golf Association
Average review score:

What else is there to be said?
"Decisions on the Rules of Golf" is a combination of the USGA's official "Rules of Golf" along with the most recent questions and challenges to the rules in a convenient Q & A format. While the decisions get deeply involved at times, for a true lover of the sport it makes for an excellent 'casual read', regardless of one's playing ability. The text's small profile will fit into almost any golf bag for quick reference on the course, and the print is large enough so as not to alienate anybody seeking the correct answer to their golf question. This is the official and most current word to be found on golf. Outstanding!

Deconstructing Special Education and Constructing Inclusion (Inclusive Education)
Published in Paperback by Open Univ Pr (March, 2001)
Authors: Gary Thomas and Andrew Loxley
Average review score:

Special education will never be the same again!!
This was a magnificent and fascinating exploration of how the various ideas and theories that we always considered to be so fundamental to special education, have done nothing but send us off in the 'wrong direction'. I was impressed by how the authors mananged to squeeze so much into such a small book. The range of intellectual traditions and concepts they draw on is quite dazzling! This book should be read by anyone with an interest in education, whether special or not.

The Deeper Christian Life
Published in Paperback by Whitaker House (July, 1995)
Author: Andrew Murray
Average review score:

Enlightenment
Summary: For those who have tried to live a 'Christian' life in their own power. This book pulls back the veil and allows one to see that it is impossible to lead the christian life w/o the guidance and comfort of the Holy Spirit.

Along with other titles such as 'Christians Guide to a Happy Life by Hannah Smith', 'They Found the Secret', and 'The Wonderful Spirit Filled Life by Dr. Charles F. Stanley' it has become clear to me that God wants us to succeed at this life. But, it is thru the guidance of the Holy Spirit that one begins to enjoy the Christian life.
